During their time at Wyoming Catholic College, students memorize, recite, and discuss some two dozen classic lyric poems. Because these poems are learned by heart, they become not merely objects of study, but formative influences on student personalities and indeed the community, overflowing into student writing and gatherings. In this webinar, Dr. Jeremy Holmes and Dr. Pavlos Papadopoulos will discuss three poems by the 19th century Jesuit priest and poet Gerard Manley Hopkins: Pied Beauty, As Kingfishers Catch Fire, and God's Grandeur. Each poem is linguistically surprising, philosophically charged, and breathtakingly beautiful in its imagery and turns of phrase. These poems are also theologically sophisticated; together, they form a kind of Trinitarian trilogy, through which Hopkins considers Creation in general and the human creature in particular in relation to God as Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.
