What could be more appropriate for our final look back over the last 40 seasons than David Rabe's Goose and Tomtom? This dark comedy had a somewhat difficult history with its 1982 run at the Public Theatre in New York and later revival directed by David Rabe with Sean Penn, Harvey Kietel, Barry Miller and Madonna. It was with this production that Undermain Theatre shifted from a locally known, strange little theatre in a strange little neighborhood, to a nationally recognized venue for new American Theatre. Founding Artistic Director Katherine Owens said that Goose and Tomtom "defined my entire way of thinking" and that it was "the beginning of our lives as artist in a certain way." After seeing the second production at Undermain in 1991, former Dallas Cowboy and author Pat Toomay put Undermain in touch with David Rabe who would come see it for himself initiating a long standing relationship between the theatre and playwright. This collaboration still continues today with Undermain producing a number of David Rabe's plays including The Black Monk (re-worked by the playwright specifically for Undermain), The Dog Problem and the workshop production of He's Born, He's Borne. Goose and Tomtom was directed by Katherine Owens and featured Bruce DuBose, Raphael Parry, Laurel Hoitsma, Lisa Lee Schmidt and Teddy Davey. It was designed by Kateri Cale (Costumes), Bruce DuBose (Sound), Robert McVay (Lighting) and Robert Winn (Scenery).
