The Power of the Written Word: Literature’s Role in Shaping Culture and Connection Sarah M. Broom + Tracy K. Smith Moderated by Vann R. Newkirk II In a world where distractions abound and our attention is fragmented, literature offers a unique opportunity to slow down and recontextualize humanity's place. This spring, at the New Orleans Book Festival, The Atlantic will deepen its exploration of the American idea through the lens of literature. We will convene some of the 21st century's most celebrated authors, essayists, and poets to examine the complexities of today's cultural landscape. With a blend of historical urgency and nuance, we'll unpack how these bold written works highlight past and present injustices and paint a vision for a more equitable future to sustain the promise of the American idea. The New Orleans Book Festival brings the world’s leading authors to Tulane University for a multi-day celebration of their works. The Festival features both fiction and non-fiction and convenes readings, panel discussions, symposia and keynote speeches. It provides an opportunity for outlets, authors and readers to interact with each other in one of the most vibrant and culturally diverse cities in the world. bookfest.tulane.edu #NOLABookFest
