Germany’s invasion of the Soviet Union, known as Operation “Barbarossa,” is considered one of the largest military operations in the history of modern warfare. Germany and its allies assembled more than 3,500,000 troops for the attack. On the 19th of September 1941, German forces entered the city of Kiev, the capital of Ukraine. On the 28th of September, the Jews were ordered to assemble the next morning for resettlement. Although only a participation of approximately 5-6,000 Jews had been expected at first, more than 30,000 Jews arrived who, thanks to the extremely clever organization, until the very moment of their execution, still believed that they would be resettled. The victims were summoned to the site - a ravine called Babi Yar or Babyn Yar which at the time, was located just outside the city. Then they were forced to undress, and compelled to enter the ravine. Sonderkommando 4a, a special detachment from Einsatzgruppe C under SS-Standartenführer Paul Blobel, then shot them in small groups. Justice finally caught up with some of the perpetrators of the Babi Yar massacre when in January 1946, 15 members of the German police were tried in Kiev for the crimes committed at Babi Yar and other atrocities. During the Kiev Trial, which became known as the “Kiev Nuremberg” and took place between January 17 to 28, 1946, 15 German and Austrian members of the German police and gendarmerie for the Kiev region were tried and convicted of the murder and torture of civilians and prisoners of war. On January 24, the aforementioned survivor Dina Pronicheva took the witness stand, and her testimony was recorded on film for a Soviet Ukrainian newsreel. She described before the Soviet court what she saw at Babyn Yar. Dina recalled: “Victims took off their clothes, while the Germans mercilessly beat and unleashed dogs upon them. Some people begged for mercy others silently undressed and walked down to the ditch. Some went insane.
