Viktor Yanukovych's election as president in 2010 enabled the Party of Regions to follow through on a program of pragmatic economic and foreign policies. As promised during President Yanukovych's 2010 campaign, Ukraine has now become a bridge between the East and West. And, the Verkhovna Rada, led by the Party of Regions, is no longer a dithering debate society -- filled with empty rhetoric and false slogans. In foreign policy, Ukraine must no longer choose between the support of its neighbor and largest trading partner -- Russia - or a so-called Western orientation with Europe and the United States. Ukraine's nuclear agreement to dispose of its highly enriched uranium signaled to the West that Kiev is a trusted partner on national security issues. At the same time, the Party of Regions has not needlessly rushed into agreements with NATO or the EU, when the benefits of membership currently far outweigh the negatives. While Europe crumbles and much of the global economy continues to stagnate, Ukraine's GDP has grown, on average, 4% annually since the Party of Regions-led government enacted macro-economic reforms in accordance with International Monetary Fund support guidelines. Ukraine's government has also managed to keep gas prices low, so those most in need -- the elderly, the unemployed, and the disabled -- need not choose between spending their pensions on keeping warm or eating. In addition to balancing Ukraine's foreign and economic policies, the government's social programs -- including a language reform law that gives rights to non-Ukrainian speakers -- further demonstrates the Party of Regions' determination to fulfill campaign promises with the voters. When Ukrainians vote on October 28, they will once again face a choice between empty promises and proven success and reform. Unlike past elections, the choice is clear. Ukraine needs stability. Ukraine needs economic growth. Ukraine needs the Party of Regions.
