Now available in 1080p HD! Opened in 1848 and rebuilt in 1934 by a group of architects known as the Gruppo Tuscano, Florence Santa Maria Novella station was built to a design helping to represent the modern world of Mussolini's Fascist Italy. Like many stations in Italy, the design incorporated a more angular contrast to the neo-Gothic and renaissance designs that surrounded them, attempting to show a new world branching from the old in the form of a railway. Today, Santa Maria Novella station is one of the main interchange points for expresses travelling from north to south, primarily on the Florence - Rome High Speed Line and is also a major interchange for regional services to the east of the city. Trains featured in this video are: FS Class E.464: The E.464's were built by Bombardier between 1996 and 2013 to replace the ageing E.424 and E.646 locomotives. The fleet of 570 locomotives are powered by 3000V DC and are easily adaptable to various forms of coaching stock, including the high capacity double-deck Dosto stock or the more conventional single deck stock. Alstom Automotrice à grande vitesse (AGV) ETR 575: Operated by private high speed operator Nuovo Trasporto Viaggiatori the Alstom AGV 575's entered service with the operator on April 28th 2012, and not even a year after operations began they have carried well over 2 million passengers across Italy. The AGV articulated trainsets began design as early as 2000 but the first trainset wasn't constructed until 2008. Currently NTV is the first and only operator of the class at present although sets are hoped to be used on the new LGV route from France to Spain. FS Class ME085 DMU: Built by Alstom and designed by Gui Giaro, these 3 car Diesel Multiple units have become the backbone of Trenitalia's regional fleet, displacing many of the older FIAT designs that dated back to the 1950s. These units come in two varieties, both as Diesel Multiple Units (DMU) or Electric Multiple Units (EMU). FS Class ALe 426/502: Now Italy's primary suburban EMU, the ALe 426/502's were built between 1996 and 2000 AnsaldoBreda in conjunction with ABB and were designed by Italian auto-mobile designer Pininfarina. Each train is formed by fixed sections of four bi-level pieces: two motorized units (ALe 426/506) and two coaches between them (Le 736). Two sections can be coupled together, but by now it is not possible on Trenitalia units (on FNM ones is common practice). FS Class ETR 600 New Pendolino: Entering service in 2008, the ETR 600 and 610's were built by Alstom to become the universal Pendolino class of Europe, with examples now in service with Trenitalia, RENFE of Spain and SBB CFF FFS of Switzerland. In Italy, these units came to replace the ageing Class 450 units on primary Intercity services and were able to supplement the 1994 Cisalpino ETR 460 sets. Enjoy!
