Four Ways Back Home (The Chrysalis) is a reflective introduction to the Self-Forgiveness Journey, inspired by my doctoral research on the lived experience of self-forgiveness. In my heuristic study, self-forgiveness emerged not as a single decision or moment of resolution, but as a process of returning—again and again—to the self with greater honesty, compassion, and steadiness. Participants described an inner terrain marked by rupture, self-judgment, and shame, followed by a quieter, less visible phase of re-orientation. I came to understand this phase as the chrysalis. This song gives voice to that in-between space—the place where nothing looks finished, yet something essential is taking shape. “Four Ways Back Home” introduces four relational movements that consistently appeared in the research: releasing self-punishment, restoring self-trust, reclaiming personal agency, and reconnecting with one’s values and sense of belonging. These are not steps to be completed perfectly, but pathways we revisit as life continues to change us. The imagery of the chrysalis reflects the truth that healing is often unseen. Growth happens quietly. Identity reforms beneath the surface. Self-forgiveness is not about erasing the past—it’s about changing the promises we make to ourselves going forward. This piece is offered to anyone who feels they are still becoming, still learning how to come home to themselves with kindness. Written and created by Dr. Diana Smith, PhD — based on research in self-forgiveness and the heuristic process of meaning-making.
