My grandmother, whose mother tongue I never spoke during her lifetime. I longed to answer her in a way she could understand, a way she could truly know me. So I wrote this song, still hearing her voice, in the languages she spoke and I never did—Amazigh and Darija. Telling her: I am still here, waiting to answer you. So you can understand me. Through learning the Guimbri and the Gnawa scales in Essaouira, the melody flowed like water. When I met my Maalem—my Gnawa master—Maalem Saddik, he embraced the song and helped me translate the lyrics into the two languages he, like my grandmother, also speaks. Now, finally, I can speak it too. When I began working with Oussama Menay in the studio, I envisioned a sirens' choir, like the ones I grew up listening to in old vintage Brazilian songs from the '60s and '70s. Sounds from the other side of my childhood—my Brazilian side—rose up to express themselves through the sweet harmonies. Sung in Tamazight and Moroccan Arabic, this song is a letter to Lala Tamar’s grandmother, it’s a heartfelt exploration of identity and cultural memory. It fuses Gnawa rhythms with Maghreb pop highlighting global beats. Written and recorded in Morocco, Essaouira and Agadir, the song features organic percussion, dreamy synths, and enchanting choirs.
