Origins and Early Years: • The airport began operations in 1955, replacing the older Isla Grande Airport as the main air hub for Puerto Rico. • It was originally named Isla Verde International Airport, but was later renamed after Luis Muñoz Marín, Puerto Rico’s first elected governor. Growth and Development: • In the 1960s and 1970s, SJU became a key hub for travel between the U.S. mainland, the Caribbean, and Latin America. • Airlines like Pan Am, Eastern Airlines, and American Airlines made SJU a major connecting point. • The airport saw multiple expansions, including new runways and terminals, to handle increasing traffic. Modern Era: • In 2013, SJU became the first major U.S. airport to be privatized under a public-private partnership. The operator, Aerostar Airport Holdings, took over management and modernization efforts. • Since then, the airport has undergone renovations and upgrades, improving terminals and passenger experience. Today: • SJU is the main international gateway to Puerto Rico and the busiest airport in the Caribbean. • It serves as a hub for JetBlue and Frontier. • It offers flights to the U.S., Caribbean, Latin America, and Europe.
