If you've seen some of the other videos that I've made about the Lava Genie, you will already know that I am a complete novice when it comes to playing a musical instrument and that the main driving force behind my decision to buy one was because the manufacturers claimed it is very simple to learn. I have only had a few hours of practice since I got it but, to some extent, this claim is justified as I am now able to play several of my favourite tracks with reasonable proficiency and, even if I do say myself, if you didn't know that I'd never played a guitar/musical instrument before this, you'd be forgiven for thinking that I'd had a least a modicum of experience. However, what my admittedly limited time with the Lava Genie has taught me is... For a complete newbie like me.... It isn't quite what I'd expected! Don't get me wrong... I LOVE ITBUT, to me at least, it doesn't come across as a 'stand-alone' instrument that you can simply pick up and play all by itself. What it does provide though as an excellent 'backing instrument' for singers and vocalists and/or, as long as you don't mind being tied to the (Lava+) app and can either sing or get people to sing along with you, it makes an excellent 'do it yourself Karaoke machine'! In this video, I've put together a few clips of me playing along with some of my favourite tracks using the Lava+ app (I have also included (after the initial song) a screen recording of the app running so that you can see how this works). Also/as I stated in the title of this video... It took me a while, but I finally worked out why they call it a 'SAMPLER guitar' because, as you'll see/hear, it doesn't just download the chords/notes of a song to the Lava Genie, it also effectively downloads the 'whole thing' including accompaniments/backing sounds too in some cases) which, in many cases, is truly 'spot on' (well, they would be if I could keep in sync (clearly I need a lot more practice yet!) making it sound like the 'original' in many ways. So... What next? Well, I am truly smitten with the Lava Genie and fully intend to continue practicing as much as I can. I have also just acquired a 'digital wind instrument' (Aerophone Mini) so look out for review on that one in due course too. I am also eying up another device (the Enya Cyber G) which seems very similar to the lava Genie (this one also has a keyboard built into it and, I have to say... it looks VERY COOL (though it's a bit more expensive than the LG) so this may be my next project!
