What can you do when you're either in a shelter—or waiting for the next siren to run to one? It turns out your attention span changes. These days, I find myself cooking, doing dishes, and spending more time on my phone. Reading articles? No chance. But editing surgical videos? Surprisingly, yes. So I’m starting to post some cases. Today’s video, a surgery I did 2 months ago: a 1-month-old baby, born at 27 weeks, who presented with stage 4 ROP. As nothing is simple in the Middle East, this is a Palestinian infant who reached me through a complicated path—and I don’t know if or when I’ll be able to examine him again. The surgery is a lens-sparing vitrectomy. I’m delicately separating the retina from the lens, walking a fine line between minimal invasiveness and the need for a definitive, one-time repair—given the high likelihood that this is a “now or never” operation. Would love to hear your thoughts. Wishing for quieter days—for all of us.
