VS. Gradius is essentially the Nintendo/Famicom version of the game in arcade form, but with the famous Konami code disabled. In the console version, the code gave you a bunch of power ups (2 options, missiles, and the shield). Besides the Konami code, all other secrets, points bonuses, warps, ect are intact. I show off quite a few in my run, but the most important and essential secret (in my opinion) is rapid fire. You must have all power up bars lit on the bottom, and then pick up another power up when your 1000's digit is a zero. You can see me execute it at 3:15 - I purposely do not kill the few enemies beforehand to avoid making my score too high to do this. You keep the rapid fire until the end of the loop you're on, or you lose your life. There is a 10,000 point "bravery" bonus that can be activated in a similar fashion, but instead of the 1000's digit being zero, it must be 5. I call it the bravery bonus because you give up your backup shield to wrap the power ups over and get the bonus points. You can see this at 5:55, where I pickup the power up that wraps the bar back, my score jumps from 295,300 to 305,800 (500 points for the power up item). I also use several of the warps, which are activated with very obscure conditions. The first warp I take is immediately in level 1 in loop 1 (approx 2:30). That warp is activated by destroying all 4 of the hatch enemies in the stage when your score has an even number in the 1000's digit. This skips you right to stage 3. In stage 3, if you are able to destroy 10 or more Moai statues in the stage then you will be warped to stage 5 after defeating the "shoot the core!" boss. This is also shown in the first loop, approx. 5:20 in the run. There's another warp that you can use to skip from level 2 to 4, bypassing stage 3. At approx. 1:17:35 (in loop 6) I defeat the Big Core stage 2 boss within 2 seconds of his weak spot becoming vulnerable to activate this warp. I actually did not intentionally use this warp, as I rarely play stage 4 and I'm not as practiced on it. Finally, there are several 1up drops that only activate when you move your ship to the correct location, and the thousands digit of your score must be an even number for 1up to be awarded. Check out the 1up awarded at 31:55 near the end of stage 2; the same location the 1up doesn't activate at 46:55, because the score isn't even on the thousands digit. Final thoughts: A really amazing port that is different enough from the original arcade game, and its differences are used in a way that I might just enjoy it more. If you're looking to score-chase and do your own multi loop run, I recommend practicing the 3rd loop until you can do it consistently. The difficulty is at max there, and you can potentially play it forever by looping it...if you don't MESS UP! :) Gameplay was recorded with WolfMAME v.218 using default settings. As with all my runs - no TAS (tool assistance), cheats, hacks, or save states are used.
