The Turkish authorities have arrested more than 1,000 people during five consecutive nights of protests after the imprisonment of Ekrem Imamoglu, the mayor of Istanbul and leading challenger to President Erdogan’s two-decade rule. Ali Yerlikaya, the interior minister, said on Monday that acid, petrol bombs, axes and knives had been seized from protesters and that some detainees faced legal proceedings for attacking police, damaging public property and threatening public safety. Yerlikaya also said that people linked to “12 different terrorist organisations” had been among those arrested and 123 police officers had been injured.
