The Clone Wars rage across the galaxy, throwing the Jedi and the Republic into a war they are unprepared for. These thoughts run through Mace’s mind as he walks through the Jedi Temple, observing the young knights and Padawans training as they may soon be forced to march into the front lines. His eyes fall on one Padawan, in particular, Anakin Skywalker who is training alongside his fellow Jedi. Although Mace has his doubts about him, he can see the potential in the young Padawan as he acquitted himself well during the Battle of Geonosis, surviving what many more experienced Jedi failed. While some might say it was pure luck, Mace senses there is something more and considers the idea that he is the Chosen One. Although hard to believe at first, he has to admit his powers are considerable, and Jedi with such capabilities need to be nurtured and trained if they are to have a chance of surviving this war. As Anakin finishes training, Mace approaches him. When he draws closer, it feels as though he is looking in a mirror, and around the Padawan are a series of hairline fractures, a shatterpoint that can change the galaxy. Mace: Skywalker, a moment please. Anakin: What is it, Master? Mace: I would like to commend you on your accomplishments in the recent battle. But you must know this will only be the first of many trials you will face. If you are to survive, I believe you will require more training. Anakin: I understand, master. And I appreciate your concern. Obi-Wan continues to train me every day. Mace: I’m afraid that the usual Jedi training might not be sufficient, especially in a war of this size. No, I have something else in mind. The battlefield is a place of chaos and uncertainty. So much can change in an instant and this can be deadly if you are not prepared. I wish to teach you how to find these opportunities in ways that no one else can. Anakin: Surprised. Do you wish to teach me about shatter points? Mace: I do, and make no mistake, young one. I am not doing this on a whim nor will I teach many others this technique. I do this because I believe you have what it takes to handle this technique. Now, am I right to think this or should I search for one more able? Anakin: No, I’m your guy, Master. Mace smiles and the next day the two begin their training. However, instead of staying in the Jedi Temple, Mace instead takes Anakin to one of the new barracks for the clone army to observe them train. They watch as the clones march and conduct drills with Anakin ordered to observe them closely. He closes his eyes and senses their presence. To him, it is like a great mass of people, thousands of souls, all unique but mixed in one mass. However, this is precisely what Mace doesn’t want Anakin to see. Instead, he instructs him to focus on the clones as individuals, looking at them one at a time and then zooming out. Suddenly, things begin to grow clearer. Instead of a single group, he can make out the details more, as thousands of figures make up a larger group. Mace nods in approval and tells him that is what Shatterpoint is. Most Jedi see the Force as a great field of energy, something flowing and fluid, but monolithic. Shatterpoint is about making out the smallest details within this mass. Rather than a huge wave, it is a spiderweb, with everything interwoven and playing a role. To emphasize his point, the Jedi shows how the clones act, fighting as squads, each with a speciality or task and supported by different means, whether air support, artillery, or armor. All of these have the potential to upset the battlefield if they move it at the right time. That is the other important point of this ability. To seek out opportunities.
