The new KWS Seed Inventory – Treasure trove of breeding

The Svalbard Global Seed Vault on the Norwegian island of Spitsbergen was established in 2008 to preserve genetic resources of crops from all over the world and thus safeguard plant diversity on earth. The seed vault houses more than one million seed samples from around 5,000 different crop species. In the case of natural disasters, wars or other crises, it´s intended to secure humanity's food supply. KWS maintains its own, no less impressive new Seed Inventory, which offers space for up to 1.3 million seed samples of sugarbeet, fodder beet, oilseed rape, catch crops and peas. Selecting from this genetic diversity is the basis of our breeding work: during the multi-year selection process, our breeders look for specific traits in the seed samples, which they combine in a targeted manner to develop new, improved varieties.
