Healthcare is treated as a service business. However the peculiarities of healthcare means that it is not subject to the typical forces of the marketplace. For example, the buyer (the prescriber or the doctor) is not the consumer (the patient). The payer (insurance company), is also, often not the consumer. The resulting inefficiencies are compounded by asymmetry of information. In such a situation each player optimizes for its own success (profitability) leaving the consumer (the patient) with the short end of the stick. In this discussion the authors of Mission Possible, Swami Subramaniam and Aparajithan Srivathsan, join Arjun Rajagopalan (surgeon, now active as a healthcare policy commentator), to tease apart some of the strands of the healthcare "fee for service" model and propose ways to avoid the problems inherent to the model when applied to healthcare.
