With Jon Trickett MP // Chris Peace, Orgreave Truth & Justice Campaign and 2019 Candidate in North East Derbyshire// Russell Fraser, Haldane Society of Socialist Lawyers // Sophie Wilson, 2019 Labour Candidate in Rother Valley. On the 18th June, 1984, riot police charged and assaulted picketing miners at the Orgreave coking plant, leaving many traumatised, bloodied, bruised and with broken bones. In an inversion of the truth, picketers were portrayed by police, the Tory government and the media as violent thugs, and 95 miners were subsequently - and wrongfully – arrested and charged with riot and unlawful assembly. Although the cases collapsed in court, no one has ever been held to account for the events of that day From Orgreave, to Hillsborough, to Grenfell, the state has facilitated & enforced a system that has opposed and hindered the interests of working class people, at times to lethal effect. Our speakers look at the relationship between the state and working class people, and what happens when workers organise to defend their interests.
