An easy way to buy tickets for the Japan bullet train, the Shinkansen, is by buying them online ahead of time. SmartEX is very convenient for purchasing Shinkansen tickets and it allows you to link your IC cards so that you can use your card such as SUICA, ICOCA, and PASMO to access Shinkansen trains. You can purchase tickets for the non-reserved cars as well as purchase tickets for the reserved cars. Reservations can even be changed or cancelled if needed up to the time of departure of your reserved train. Although, cancellations might incur a fee. If you plan on traveling in the Tokaido-Sanyo-Kyushu Shinkansen (connecting Tokyo, Nagoya, Kyoto, Osaka, Hiroshima, Hakata, and more) and you’re traveling with an oversized luggage, you need to make a reservation for a seat with an oversized baggage area (over 160 cm) or a seat with an oversized baggage compartment (80 x 60 x 40 cm and 80 x 60 x 50 cm spaces). This only applies to baggage over 160 cm measured in height + width + depth. Most carry-on luggage and small-medium luggage can be placed in the overhead compartments of the trains without the need for a reservation. There is no extra fee for reserving the seats with luggage space, but if you bring an oversized luggage onboard without a reservation you might get charged with a 1,000 yen fine.
