The first edition (broadcast on 21 June 1992) of a six-part BBC TV series presented by Alan Titchmarsh. This edition, sub-titled “A Chants Encounter”, features the monks of Ampleforth College. “Some of the earliest recorded Christian song, the Gregorian chant, goes back a thousand years, but is still sung in abbeys, convents, and parishes. In France, the musicians of Taize have taken the shape of this old plainsong, and transformed it into an essential ingredient of modern Christian worship. The monks and laity of Ampleforth Abbey, the community of St Hilda’s, Whitby, and the Taize group of Clifton Cathedral, Bristol, are featured this week.” [Radio Times]
