This town is close to Lake Windermere, Kendal and Keswick in a beautiful part of the UK - The Lake District Also watch Bowness On Windermere -    • BOWNESS ON WINDERMERE in the Lake District...   We visit the village of Windermere in the South Lakeland district of Cumbria for a walk around the town centre streets, to see the shops and cafes, restaurants, hotels and guesthouses in this gorgeous place. Windermere grew around the railway station here that brings tourists and visitors to the area and down to the lake, whilst offering places to stay and things to do when it's raining in the Lake District such as eating in one of the cute little restaurants or drinking in one of the country pubs or bars here, or maybe shopping for some walking and hiking equipment for your walks in the lakes and mountains in the countryside around the town. We start at Windermere Train Station opposite the Windermere Hotel on Kendal Road at the top of the town before heading downhill through the streets and past the shops for a good look around this popular tourist destination. Boats from the piers in Bowness sail around the lake, many calling at Ambleside or at Lakeside where there is a restored railway. Windermere Hotel opened at the same time as the railway. Historically a part of the county of Westmorland, Windermere town was known as Birthwaite prior to the arrival of the Kendal and Windermere Railway, which stimulated its development. Windermere is a very well known holiday destination for people looking to holiday in the lake district or come for a weekend or even a day trip, to visit the lake, have a boat trip and travel to the other towns and villages close by.
