Two types of criss cross sutures are possible, a wound closure and a mattress version. Bites begin in a buccal corner of the wound (ie the distobuccal papilla of an extraction socket) and the second bite is the opposite corner (in this example the mesiolingual papilla). The third throw either engages the other buccal corner or the other lingual corner. If the surgeon engages buccal-lingual-buccal-lingual the final suture knot will have tension across the wound margin and be a wound-closure version of criss cross suturing. If the surgeon’s bites follow a buccal-lingual-lingual-buccal pattern the final suture knot will be parallel to the wound margin on the buccal mucosa and be a mattress non-tension version. Both techniques are useful for socket wound closure and can facilitate the security of a membrane or collagen wound dressing in the socket.
