Meningocele

A meningocele is a herniation of the meninges, usually associated with the spinal cord. It is illustrated in this cross-sectional view of a portion of the vertebral column as the large swelling, and in the view of a child’s back. Meningoceles a condition where the tissue coverings the spinal cord sticks out of the spinal defect but the spinal cord remains in place. This is a moderate form of spina bifida in which a fluid-filled sac is visible outside of the back area. The sac does not contain the spinal cord or nerves. Cyst removed by surgery, usually allowing for normal development.
