Intermetatarsal Neuromas are associated with acute sharp pain to the bottom of the foot and are most commonly seen between the 2nd and 3rd metatarsal bones or between 3rd and 4th metatarsal bones. Neuromas are caused by excessive pinching or friction to the nerves running between the metatarsals. Excessive pinching or friction causes the nerves to become damaged and scar tissue to form which leads to symptoms which include sharp pain, numbness, tingling, or a burning sensation. Treatment for this condition includes wearing footwear with a wide toebox and a strong, minimally flexible shoe to reduce pressure between the metatarsals. A orthotic with a metatarsal bar will further reduce pressure to the ball of the foot and help spread the metatarsal bones and prevent further damage to the nerves from occurring.
