An article written in 1885 about one man's experience on a herring fishing expedition. Taken from the great family tome, this article inspired a deep dive into the Scottish herring fishing industry at the end of the 19th and into the 20th century. Sawers Ltd first opened its doors in Glasgow in 1876 and became one of the most reputable fishmongers in Scotland. In 1893 one of the brothers crossed the Irish Sea and opened the next Sawers Ltd in Belfast. 130 years later, this store is still going strong. Our family no longer owns the business but we have a long and interesting history from a bygone era.
