Farewell mama Peanut | Most amazing wild bunny ever’s last moments after a short highlights tribute

Recorded 8.10 to 8.12.2024 and earlier highlights. Before the final new footage I have of Peanut that includes her last moments with us, I wanted to share some highlights of her extraordinary life. This channel has hours of Peanut videos so this is just a quick sampling of some of the most meaningful and favorite moments with her. I hope to someday make a long movie of her amazing life, but for now, I hope this tribute gives you a taste of what an incredibly strong, devoted, and fun wild mama bunny Peanut was. After the look back, the new footage starts on 8.10, two days before Peanut passes. I only took photos b/c it was a busy time (I gather gallons of blackberries each summer and it was peak ripening). 8.11 was really hot and Peanut didn’t come out until late so I didn’t record her. I wrote in the daily diary I’d started after she got injured that "she got her seed plate and I gave her greens, apple, and blueberries while she rested in a meadow." The next morning, her last, my husband saw her first and alerted me that she was right in front of our house. She looked exhausted. So I brought her a new treat…a juicy slice of nectarine, which she ate with gusto! A couple hours later she was lying in front of our step. She looked like she was resting, but in a way we hadn’t seen before. We were concerned and not long after she moved under a rhodie bush where she started to fade away. Her eyes started to roll back, but she’d perk up if I spoke to her. I felt she might be dying, but I hoped with all my heart she wasn’t. I told her how much she meant to me and the thousands of people around the world who had watched her videos. I thanked her for being so strong and for healing. I told her that she was the best mama and her babies were all lucky to have her. I scolded her for getting pregnant again (b/c I knew that’s what was taking her from us), and then quickly apologized. I told her I loved her and that she could rest. And then I left to pick blackberries. When I went back to the house to check on her 15 minutes later she had moved further under the bush and was gone. She passed away peacefully and feeling loved. She was the only mama to ever pass where we could find her so I knew we had to bury her. I also knew exactly where to bury her, in her favorite place by a baby Spruce tree in the “wilds.” But before we laid her to rest, I wanted to do something she would never allow while she was alive. I wanted to fully pet her. She was still warm from the sun. And so very soft! “My heart has joined the Thousand for my friend stopped running today," is from Richard Adams’ book Watership Down. It’s what the rabbits say when one of them passes. The Thousand is from the line: “All the world will be your enemy, Prince with a Thousand Enemies, and whenever they catch you, they will kill you. But first they must catch you, digger, listener, runner, prince with the swift warning.” It refers to the Thousand Enemies. So the phrase means my heart is now an enemy, because of the pain of loss. My heart is still broken as I write this, tears pouring down my face. But, all the bunnies who have come after Peanut, her family and lineage, have helped heal it. Particularly Peanut’s great-granddaughter Peaches who has gotten me through editing sad Peanut videos. She’s the first bunny to use all of Peanut’s old places and likes to play with me over Peanut’s grave. So that’s the last scene in this video. Mama Peanut was the inspiration for this channel. My first video post was of her birth on 4.25.2022, the first I'd ever witnessed. And then she became such a special bunny...long before the injury. She is my all-time favorite! Peanut has forever changed my life. Personally, I had a severe illness that caused lasting changes in my body over a decade ago and I’m still adapting and trying to improve. And so did Peanut. She teaches us not to give up, to find the simple joys in life, that we can adapt, and, healing is always possible. Her story is one of perseverance, resilience, strength, and love. She also gave 2+ years of kisses, friendly welcomes, chin rubs, and lots of tame babies, many who became mamas themselves. Her lineage and legacy live on and so will this channel. Ruby’s new babies saved me after Peanut’s death and their videos are coming very soon. Thank you to everyone who has followed Peanut’s journey; especially after she became injured. She inspired me with her tenacity, courage, and gentle spirit. She became a 3-legged wild bunny wonder who was thriving! And I’d wanted to share her message of strength and healing. I hope I have honored her life and memory respectfully. We love you mama Peanut.
