A Closer Look at Komatsu’s “North American Baby” – the D71PXi dozer

Customers got a chance to test out Komatsu’s popular D71PXi-24 dozer at the company’s recent Demo Days in Cartersville, Georgia. In the above video, Brandon Rakers, Komatsu senior product manager, gives us a walkaround tour of the 51,000-pound dozer. “The D71 is really what we call our North American baby,” Rakers says, “… because we spent a lot of time making sure that this machine was purpose-built for us.” That purpose-built approach includes integrated iMC 2.0 intelligent machine, making it what Komatsu calls a “smart dozer.” “It's not like we're adding a system to it,” Rakers explains. “When we designed this machine, the goal was this was going to be a high-performing, intelligent-machine-control machine.” Komatsu designed the machine control not just for finish grading but for using automatics the entire workday, even for general site cleanup and backfilling trenches. The system enables operators to perform auto-stripping, auto-spreading and high-production dozing for more precise and more productive dirt moving, according to Komatsu. It is also Komatsu’s largest dozer with a hydrostatic transmission, designed to give it faster travel and steering response, the company says. The dozer runs on a 237-horsepower Komatsu engine and has a blade capacity of 6.1 cubic yards. At Demo Days, Komatsu showed off its wide-track version of the dozer, which has 36-inch-wide pads. Komatsu also offers a standard track version, the D71EXi, with pads that are 24 inches wide.
