Which is better - allergy shots or allergy drops for treating allergies? Board-Certified Allergist and Immunologist, Dr. Dean Mitchell compares the options for patients and weighs on his preference. VISIT OUR WEBSITE: https://www.mitchellmedicalgroup.com ➠ A L L E R G Y S H O T S Allergy shots started in England over 100 years ago and they were first done by Dr. Robert Cook in the United States at The Allergy Center in NYC which is where Dr. Mitchell trained. Allergy shots protocol involve weekly injections, typically in the arm, and over 6 months build up to a high dose level. After 6 months, a maintenance dose is needed each month for approximately 3-5 years. With allergy shots is it possible to have a severe allergic reaction following the shot and go into anaphylactic shock which is why doctors have patients stay at the office 30 minutes after receiving their shot. ➠ A L L E R G Y D R O P S Starting in Italy and France, allergy drops came to the United States in the late 1970s/early 1980s. Dr. Morris in Wisconsin was the first to offer allergy drops at his practice. In 1998, Dr. Mitchell read a publication by Dr. Morris and went to train with him. Following the training on allergy drops, Dr. Mitchell started to only offer them at his practice due to the advantages over allergy shots. Dr. Mitchell believes the best allergy treatment is one that can be done daily. The only reason allergy shots are not done daily is because the original practice in England was only open once a week. ➠ ALLERGY DROPS ADVANTAGES ▸ No pain involved ▸ Children love this treatment because they don't have to get shots ▸ Adults also love the treatment for the same reason ▸ Very convenient - no weekly doctor office visits ▸ Treatment done daily at home ▸ Very safe and minimal risk for several allergic reactions (can't be said of allergy shots) In fact, over 50 million allergy drop doses have been given worldwide iwthout any severe allergic reactions. This is NOT true of allergy shots. The only con to either allergy treatment is with allergy shots patients can experience large local reactions which can cause discomfort days or, in some cases, patients can have a severe allergic reaction and go into anaphylactic shock - this is why you must stay at the doctors office 30 minutes following your shot. ARE ALLERGY DROPS EFFECTIVE? All studies indicate that allergy drops are as effective and give the same long-term protection that allergy shots provide. WHY DO PEOPLE STILL CHOOSE ALLERGY SHOTS? So why would anyone choose allergy shots over allergy drops? Dr. Mitchell believes the only reason might be because insurance covers some of the cost of allergy shots. However, when you factor in travel time, travel costs and co-pays for each weekly and then monthly doctor visit for 3-5 years, paying out of pocket for allergy drops might be more effective. // F O L L O W blog | https://www.mitchellmedicalgroup.com/... instagram | / thesmartestdoctor facebook | / mitchellmedicalgroup linkedin | / holisticimmunology // P O D C A S T Check out our podcast - The Smartest Doctor in the Room https://open.spotify.com/show/2PZK8pp... // A B O U T For over 25 years, Dr. Dean Mitchell, Board Certified Allergist and Immunologist, has specialized in treating leaky gut, candida, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia and immunology in NYC.
