If security is important to you, then GrapheneOS is one of the best custom ROMs available for Google Pixel smartphones. ~~~~~ Hi! Don't forget to like the video, subscribe to the channel, and hit the "Thanks" button on this video, if you can, and join our channel community here - / @explainingandroid Links ~~~~~ GrapheneOS Web Installer - https://grapheneos.org/install/web Pixel 9 Bootloader Unlock - • Complete Google Pixel 9 Series Bootloader ... Video Description ~~~~~~ I have the Pixel 9 Pro XL here, and in today's video I'll be installing the privacy-focused custom ROM called GrapheneOS. I'll be using the web installer in today's video, since that is the easiest method. . .but technical folks can manually install it with Fastboot if you'd like. #android #pixel9 #pixel9pro #pixel9proxl #grapheneos Requirements Before you can install this ROM, there are some things that must be setup ahead of time. For example, using the web installer means only these operating systems are officially supported. But I've seen it work on a plethora of other devices. You'll also need a browser that supports the WebUSB protocol. . . I'll be using Chrome. . .but these are also supported. And last up, you're going to need to have your bootloader unlocked. This is something that can take a bit of time. . .and I've already covered it in previous videos here on the channel. So to prevent this install guide from being longer than it needs to be, I'll have the Pixel 9 bootloader unlock tutorial linked down below. Anyone installing Graphene OS via a Linux machine should read through this section too. As it details some issues that can pop up from time to time. Installing GrapheneOS on Pixel 9 When you're ready to begin, though, we're going to load up this website on the PC And then we need to reboot the Pixel 9 Pro XL into Fastboot mode. . .aka bootloader mode. Once you see this Fastboot Mode menu, let's connect the phone to the PC with a USB cable. As we turn our attention to the monitor, we're going to scroll down a little until we see the Obtaining Factory Images section There, you'll see a button labeled Download Release. And we'll click on that to begin to download process. This part can take some time to complete. . .depending on how fast your internet connection is. But when you see it has completed, you're then ready to click on the Flash Release button that's right below it. Usually, I wouldn't recommend that you relock the bootloader after a custom ROM has been installed. But GrapheneOS is setup in a way that actually allows this. . .so you'll get the full security benefits of Verified Boot on Android. You don't have to lock the bootloader though. . .and if your goal is to gain root access to the phone. . .then you should leave it unlocked. But I'm getting ready to use this as my Daily Driver so security and privacy are going to be a big focus for me. I am going to lock the bootloader so the device and its software is as secure as it can be. conclusion That's really all there is to it. You can see, the web installer really makes the installation process very easy to complete. GrapheneOS has some really useful verified boot and attestation features provided by the team. Which allows you to verify everything has been installed correctly. . .and that there aren't any modified pieces of the code. So even if your host PC was infected with a nasty piece of malware. . .you can use this to make sure the software you installed was no modified in any way. If Graphene OS is not a custom ROM that you are aware of, let me know about it in the comments section below. There are a lot of useful features packed within this firmware. . .but if the majority of you are already familiar with the ROM then there's no need for me to cover them in future videos. If you would, don't forget to give this video a like. Click on that new HYPE button that YouTube has been advertising under videos lately.
