Scenic flight in a 1942 Ryan PT-22 (Maytag Messerschmitt) in San Diego County, California. The Ryan PT-22 is the military version of the Sport Trainer Aerobatic. Many changes were made to the civilian version to make it more robust for military life. These changes came with some very bad manners, that soon lead the plane to be called the Maytag Messerschmitt (because they were saying the PT-22 washed more rookie pilots than any Messerschmitt did). The PT-22 is not inherently a bad plane when flown within its limits, but was probably not the best choice as an initial trainer. It is said that the pilots who did train using the PT-22 became far superior airmen due to the vigilance the airplane taught them.
