In the spring of 2025, we visited the Forest Lodge Library in Cable, Wisconsin and sat down with Executive Director Amanda Westlund to talk about history, community, and the future of a beloved northwoods local institution. It's a wonderful example of a local business spotlight that contributes to the vibrant community and tourism in Bayfield County. Built in 1925 as a community house, this 1,000-square-foot log cabin library was commissioned by Mary Griggs in honor of her mother, Mary Steel Livingston. For 100 years, it has served as a gathering place, reading room, and cornerstone of the Cable community. With more than 8,000 visitors annually and summer patronage that nearly doubles, the library remains deeply connected to generations of families who return to the area year after year. As the Forest Lodge Library prepares to transition into a new building, this conversation reflects on its past and the stories that shaped it.
