Chris Kyle American Sniper Murderer Eddie Ray Routh Publicity Slay Trial Move. The confessed killer of real-life “American Sniper” Chris Kyle wants his murder trial moved out of town in light of the movie’s incredible box-office success, a defense lawyer said Tuesday. Eddie Ray Routh, the Marine veteran who gunned down Kyle and his friend two years ago, is scheduled to go to trial on Feb. 11, but defense lawyer J. Warren St. John said he’ll refile previously denied requests to move proceedings out of tiny Erath County, Texas. Routh admits he killed the men, but his lawyer said he’ll pursue a diminished-capacity defense. The corporal served four years in the Marines and did tours in Iraq in 2007 and Haiti in 2010. In the months before Kyle’s slaying, Routh had been taken to a mental hospital twice after threatening to harm family members and himself, officials said. He was busted once for DWI in early 2012. Before Kyle’s grisly death, the 38-year-old sharpshooter was a devoted volunteer for veteran services, according to loved ones. They said Kyle did anything and everything asked of him by returning servicemen — even mowing lawns and buying groceries. Routh’s schoolteacher mom reached out to Kyle and asked him to befriend the Marine who was struggling with signs of post-traumatic stress disorder. That’s when Kyle — played by Bradley Cooper in the Clint Eastwood-directed flick — and his pal Chad Littlefield took Routh to the Rough Creek Lodge & Resort on Feb. 2, 2013 for some relaxation. Kyle and Littlefield were shot to death at close range by Routh with a semiautomatic pistol in a remote area of the lodge.
