This house was built for Captain George Flavel starting in 1883 and completed in 1885. The interior of the house is around 11,600 square feet. It consists of two and a half stories. George Flavel's gardener Louis Schultz began planting trees, roses, bulbs and shrubs that are still on the property. George Flavel died 1893 at age 69. His wife Mary Christina died 1928 at age 88. Daughter Katie died 1910 at age 46 and daughter Nelly died 1933 at age 74. All four of which died inside the home. Their son Captain George Conrad Flavel died 1923 at age 68 in Astoria. The home remained in the family until it was donated to the city in 1934 by Patricia Flavel (Great-Grandaughter). The city returned it to her two years later. The same year the residence and grounds were deeded to Clatsop County with the conditions that they would be kept in good repair and used for public purposes. Clatsop County transferred the title to the Historical Society in 1995.
