Here are my top 5 QUICK TIPS for making your videos look INSTANTLY BETTER! No extra equipment needed, just some smarts when filming your footage. Taking your videos from low quality to great looking does not have to be difficult or expensive. With these 5 tips you are guaranteed to improve the quality of your video instantly. 1. Add plenty of light to your scene Your camera can not see as well in the dark as your eyes. Low light can make your footage look grainy and dull. Film near a window or use some cheap video lights (e.g. Yongnuo YN600) to add some more light to your scene. With enough light, even mobile phone footage can come out looking great! 2. Shoot in manual mode Your camera will automatically adjust shutter speed, aperture and ISO on the fly to keep the image brightness even. This can lead to all sorts of ugly artefacts and make your video look low quality. Set your camera to manual mode, use AE-lock (auto exposure lock) if available or get one of the many apps for your phone to shoot in manual mode. 3. Disable auto white balance White balance is used to define true white in your video. Set this to manual mode to avoid colour shifts while you are filming. Even if you get this a little wrong, as long as it's constant you can always fix it up in post. 4. Stabilise your camera Avoid hand-holding your camera. Use a tripod. You can even hold the tripod to stabilise your camera, build yourself a cheap Fig Rig ($25) or get a professional grade Gimbal (like the Osmo) to get smooth footage even while hand holding your camera. 5. Do simple colour correction in your editing software (post production) It is really easy to adjust your brightness, contrast and white balance in your editing software and won't take your more than a couple of minutes. Better still, almost ANY video editing software you may be using will have these basic tools available.
