Chaired by Sir Robert Buckland QC MP, the Levelling Up Commission held its first inquiry session on the role of system change and devolution in the Levelling Up agenda. The panel of experts discussed the merits of doing so, and how 'London-style powers' can benefit other local authorities in service delivery . Panellists: Ben Houchen, Mayor of Teesside Sir Merrick Cockell, Chair Localis and former Chair Local Government Association Cllr Richard Clewer, Leader Wiltshire Unitary Council Cllr Sam Chapman-Allen, Chair District Councils’ Network Cllr Tim Oliver, Leader Surrey County Council and Chair, County Councils Network Tim Bowles, former Mayor of West of England and Chair of the M9 Group of Mayors Ian Hudspeth OBE, former Leader of Oxfordshire County Council Cllr Euan Jardine, Conservative Group Leader Scottish Borders Council Cllr Susan Hall AM, Leader Greater London Assembly Conservatives Professor Tony Travers, Visiting Professor in Department of Government, LSE About the Commission: Chaired by former Secretary of State, Sir Robert Buckland QC MP and a committee of local and regional government leaders, the Commission intends to consider ways to implement the Government’s Levelling Up White Paper and subsequent Bill from the perspective of local and regional government. Too often the Levelling Up agenda is something being done ‘to and for’ local and regional government, the Commission intends to make sure it is done ‘with and by’ them. Through roundtable meetings with MPs and senior leaders of local and regional government from across the UK, the Commission intends to set out a series of recommendations to deliver the 12 national ‘Missions’ through system change, boosting pay and productivity, spreading opportunities, improving public services and restoring local pride. #politics #policy #government #levellingup #conservative
