As a patient who is undergoing cataract surgery, this definitely is a question which you have to ask your doctor. Well, any surgery for that matter has an excepted complication rate and so does cataract surgery. It is complication like infections, displacement of the intraocular lens or rupture of the posterior capsule, the layer on which the intraocular lens has to implanted during the surgery are the common complications of cataract surgery. But fortunately the rate of these complications is near zero, the reason being of we now have advanced sterilisation and disinfections protocols and hospital infection control is at the centre stage of all surgical procedure. The microincison cataract surgeries, which is commonly routinely performed at our centre, the incision site is 2.2mm, which is self sealing, completely bloodless, the chance of would leak with such a strong incision is very less Moreover there is no injection, anaesthesia, or block, in the form of a peribulbar block, given in 90% of the patients. When this is not used, all the complications related to anaesthesia or injections are automatically eliminated. Ad in the 10% of the patients where the injection or the block is given, we use the medial conal injection which is the safest anaesthesia block for a cataract surgery. This being said, I would like to say that all precautions required for preventing any risk during or after cataract surgery are utmost important and we take the best possible care that our patients enjoy good vision after cataract surgery.
