UK: WARREN CHRISTOPHER RETURNS TO US AFTER BOSNIA CONFERENCE

(22 Jul 1995) English/Nat NATO military planners are set to begin to translate yesterday's (Thursday) London agreement on more aggressive U-N military action in Bosnia into a detailed bombing campaign according to U-S Defense Secretary William Perry. The Bosnian Serb leadership has been warned that air power will be brought to bear on them should they attack the U-N safe haven of Gorazde. On Friday, Gorazde and the other "safe areas" of Zepa and Sarajevo all were under fire and Serb forces advanced on a fourth, Bihac. Warren Christopher left London with the backing of the British and French he'd come looking for agreement on the use of massive air power against Bosnian Serb aggression on Gorazde. Instead of beginning with a massive campaign against Bosnian Serb air defenses and spreading to other military targets, the air campaign would focus on providing air support for Bosnian government troops on the ground in Gorazde as well as U-N peacekeepers in the enclave. The Bosnian Government says Friday's conference didn't go far enough. The Clinton administration will be hoping it was enough to stop Republican calls for the arming of the Bosnian Muslims.
