Ok! so, I have played this song many times over the years off and on and have always loved this little "B-side track" that was actually part of the CD-single from Van Halen that was to promote their then new album BALANCE. (Incredible album if you happen to be the 1 person that hasn't listened to it.. DO IT.. A LOT). Anyways, last night (11/13/2020) I was re-visiting this song again and found out through some other Van Halen fans that Edward had in fact written and recorded this song in the early 80's (1983 I believe) after the passing of a friend of his. He went as far as to record the song, played all the instruments including electric drums (as they were the drums of choice during that era). SO, last night I literally had a dream/epiphany on this song. Since it was done around 1983, I wonder what guitar he played on it? THEN IT HIT ME (Not the guitar.. the idea) WHAT IF: Ed played it on his steinberger Trans Trem guitar!!?? Would actually make perfect sense because during that time he was really into writing things on his trans trem. Ed was great friends with Ned Steinberger and Ned had already developed the Trans Trem by 1983. The trans trem officialy debuted at winter NAMM in 1984. So, I decided to see if I could do it and WHAM! it sounds (tonally) damn near EXACT to the recording! Its not a hard transition if you practice. Basically, the song is in standard 440 E tuning, but then he would have had to switch down to the lowest tuning on the trans trem *drop B*. Although I can't confirm Ed wrote this song on what would have been his "New" Trans Trem guitar then or not, it still sounds really close and was a lot of fun to mess with. This guitar I'm using is a replica of Ed's Peavey Wolfgang equipped with the trans trem unit. Hope you enjoy! CRaNk It Up!
