Mariela formally joined the institution on 13 November 1978, following the passing of her father, Antonio Garabedian, an Armenian refugee who worked in ECLAC General Services and played an active role in the construction of the ECLAC headquarters building in Vitacura, Santiago. Mariela’s career spans more than 30 years, primarily in the Division of Administration and Human Resources. Mariela’s account is marked by deep emotion and a steadfast commitment to the values of the United Nations. She offers a perspective on the institution’s evolution from the challenges posed by the financial crises of the 1980s, to the sense of community fostered through the ECLAC Choir.
