May our faith by fervent light divining Conduct us to the infant’s cradle-side, As in former times, one star yet brightly shining The chiefs of Orient to him did guide. The King of Kings was born in a lowly manger, Ye rulers of today, high-handed in your grandeur, Here unto your pride hear God proclaim the danger: Bow down your heads before the Redeemer, Bow down your heads before the Redeemer. The Redeemer breaks every bond and tether: The Earth is free, and heaven open wide. Where there was a slave, he sees but a brother, And love binds those that in iron chains did bide. From the original poem, "Minuit, Chrétiens," by Placide Cappeau, which was renamed "Cantique de Noel" with the addition of the melody by Adolphe Adam. English translation © Andrew Calhoun. The original 1847 lyric was previously translated into English as "O Holy Night" by John Sullivan Dwight in 1855.
