(6 Aug 2000) French/Nat XFA A memorial mass dedicated to the victims of the Air France Concorde crash was held on Sunday at the Church of St Peter and St Paul in Gonesse. Two weeks after the tragedy, the town of Gonesse has been unable to dismiss the horror of what happened on July 25 when flight AF4590 crashed into a hotel in the town north of Paris. The accident killed 113 people. All 109 people on the plane and four people on the ground perished in the accident. After the mass, Jean Pierre Blazy, the mayor of Gonesse expressed his frustration that investigators have still not been able to explain what caused the crash. But the day was primarily reserved for quiet prayer and contemplation as the inhabitants of the small French town struggle to come to terms with the catastrophe that has shaken their lives. SOUNDBITE (French) "For the victims of this aeroplane accident, we pray. We also pray for the people of Gonesse" SUPER CAPTION: Bishop of Pontoise, region of Val D'Oise SOUNDBITE (French) "The population is traumatised. The city is wounded. We know that for now the Concorde will not fly and we are asking a lot of questions because nearly 15 days after the catastrophe we realise that we do not know what happened. There are new elements in the investigation but at the same time, we don't know the chain of events that produced this catastrophe." SUPER CAPTION: Mayor of Gonesse: Jean Pierre Blazy: SOUNDBITE (French): "In this little town of Gonesse the accident has profoundly marked the people so it was normal that for this Sunday Mass all the Christians who are here were united to commemorate the memory of the victims of the catastrophe."
