The YORKW!SE Energy Conservation & Retrofit Project was York University’s answer to the school’s need to conserve energy and protect our planet. With MCW’s help, York University now saves over 25% each year on its energy consumption and reduces its campus’ Greenhouse Gas emissions by over 16,000 tonnes! How did we do this? By implementing measures such as this 3,000 Ton Steam Turbine Chiller – a machine that uses wasted steam to power a centrifugal-drive chiller that cools water used for building cooling all over York University’s Keele Campus. Not only does the chiller make use of wasted heat as a source of power, it has also replaces older chillers that drew that same power from Toronto’s aging electricity grid, which in turn substantially reduced the overall electricity demand of the Keele Campus, a major achievement in terms of campus – and urban – sustainability!
