It’s time for another installment of our new series “Evolution.” In this show we tell the story of a band’s career through 5 defining tracks… each song chosen to showcase the evolution of a band’s sound and artistic direction. To keep things moving forward, we impose a limit of just one song per album… though for this episode I’m kind of cheating a little. You’ll see why… For today’s show we’re featuring the band that taught us how to rock, it’s Kiss! And you know what? As soon as I started into this one, I knew I was in trouble. With Kiss forming in the 70s and just recently wrapping up their final tour, that means there are 5 decades of history and material to sort through. It’s overwhelming! So to simplify things, I’m sticking to their first two decades of work. And thankfully, I don’t have to tackle this one alone. Like I mentioned upfront, today we’re getting help from one of the band members: the Space Ace himself… Ace Frehley. : So there’s so much to cover here that I just gotta jump into it… So let’s get going. It would be a hard-fought beginning for Kiss members Paul Stanley (the Star Child), Gene Simmons (the Demon), Peter Criss (the Cat), and Ace Frehley (the Spaceman). Over the course of their first three albums, the band struggled to find an audience outside of their live shows, which showcased the face-painted foursome at their best. Their first trio of albums included ‘Kiss’ and ‘Hotter than Hell’ in 1974 and ‘Dressed to Kill’ in 1975, all of which put up relatively disappointing numbers. Their breakthrough wouldn’t happen until their triumphant live record Alive! in 1975. Obviously, there was some great music leading up to Alive!. And one highlight I have to mention is Cold Gin, although it’s not one of today’s songs. Let’s just call it an honorable mention. One of Kiss’s best kick-ass tunes, Cold Gin was written in a New York subway by Ace Frehley, who said he had never taken a guitar lesson. He had no idea it was destined to become a Kiss classic.
