Does your dog do odd things at odd times? Here we look at how to read dogs weird behaviours. Often these are displacement behaviours. Recognising these helps us to read dogs and understand how dogs communicate. Here we will look at why dogs scratch when stressed or anxious, appeasement licking, dogs that eat and drink when stressed, dogs spinning around and why dogs excessively chew their paws and many more ways a dog shows they are anxious. Dogs communicate stress, anxiety, and uncertainty through subtle body language cues known as displacement behaviours. If your dog suddenly starts yawning, lip licking, scratching, or stretching when there’s no reason to, they may be feeling conflicted or overwhelmed. These dog behaviours often occur when a dog is unsure how to respond to a situation—such as meeting a new dog, hearing a loud noise, or being in an unfamiliar environment. Recognising these early warning signs of stress can help prevent further anxiety-related behaviours like barking, whining, pacing, and can even help stop a reactive dog from reacting.
