In this video, I take the Asics Metaspeed Ray Tokyo out for a 5K race review at my local parkrun in Oak Hill. I’ll walk you through the race footage, my performance (17:41, 2nd place overall), and how the shoe felt in real race conditions and whether it performs better than the Puma Fast-R Race Performance Not my fastest (PB: 17:13), but the Rays delivered a smooth, cushioned ride. Felt comfortable and bouncy, though not as quick as the Puma Fast-R Nitro Elite 3 over 5K. I think this shoe shines more at the half marathon or marathon distance thanks to its soft, cushioned midsole. Shoe Breakdown Weight: ~133g (UK 9.5) Stack / Drop: 39mm heel / 34.5mm forefoot, 5mm drop Upper: Lightweight micro mesh, good lockdown, but narrow midfoot — not ideal for wide feet Outsole: Minimal rubber, great grip, but durability concerns with exposed foam Midsole: FF Blast Turbo foam + half plate, soft and bouncy with a smooth rocker What I Liked Cushioned, comfortable ride Super bouncy and fun Lightweight and agile Great for longer races (HM/Marathon) What I Didn’t Like Narrow, unstable around corners Durability issues with outsole High price point (£265) Not the fastest option for 5K/10K Verdict The Asics Metaspeed Ray Tokyo is one of the most enjoyable super shoes to run in — soft, bouncy, and marathon-friendly. It’s not as quick or aggressive as the Puma Fast-R 3 over 5K, but it’s a serious contender for longer distances, and I may even consider it for my New York Marathon. If you’re a lighter, forefoot striker who loves cushioned supershoes, you’ll probably love the Rays. Heavier heel strikers should look elsewhere (Sky or Edge).
