Packard Twin-6 With Kegresse Track One of the first-ever modified off-road vehicles was the Packard Twin-6 with Kegresse Track. The car was adapted for the ill-fated Czar Nicholas II, the last of the Romanovs. Nicholas II’s brother, Grand Duke Michael, also owned a Twin-6. 7. Rolligon The Rolligon is a type of tire that was designed to traverse both rugged terrain and soft tundra or desert. Rolligon tires, which are made of nylon and rubber, are filled with very low-pressure air and have large surface areas, distributing the vehicle’s weight over a bigger surface. So it can exert far less pressure on the ground than any conventional tire. 6. Letourneau TC-497 Overland Train Mark II During the 1950s, the Texas-based heavy equipment company LeTourneau began designing massive land trains capable of hauling heavy loads of cargo over challenging terrain. Burlak The Russian-made Burlak is a 23-foot-long (7 meters), six-wheeled, amphibious armored personnel carrier that writer Michael Ballaban of Jalopnik called “the best truck in the universe.” It can traverse through deep snow, wetlands, taiga, tundra, mountainous terrain, and even open water. 3 Aton-Impulse Viking 2992 This amphibious off-road vehicle is manufactured in an industrial city in southwest Russia and was designed with fuel efficiency and all-terrain capability in mind.
