I was privileged to study at the Academia Granados-Marshall in Barcelona under the legendary Alicia de Larrocha and Maria Teresa Monteys. In this master class, I share the specific technical, interpretive, and "hidden" traditions passed down directly from Enrique Granados to his successors. Presented by the San Francisco International Piano Festival at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, this session explores one of the crown jewels of the Spanish repertoire: "Quejas, o la Maja y el Ruiseñor" (The Maiden and the Nightingale) from Granados' Goyescas. In this class, we dive deep into: The Larrocha Critical Edition: Key insights and corrections that differ from standard scores, based on the definitive interpretive tradition. The "Granados Rubato": Demonstrating the very particular sense of timing and "air" taught to me by Larrocha and Monteys. Historical Context: Why this was the only movement dedicated to his wife, Amparo, and the folk song origins of the melody. Hidden Polyphony: Identifying and voicing the "hidden" inner lines that define the texture of Goyescas. Art & Poetry: Connecting the visual textures of Francisco Goya to the music and using Federico García Lorca’s concept of "Duende" to find a visceral connection to the performance. #Granados #AliciadeLarrocha #PianoMasterclass #Goyescas #SpanishPiano #ClassicalMusic #PianoPedagogy #SFCM Yitang Han performs Enrique Granados’ “Los Requiebros,” from “Goyescas.” San Francisco Conservatory of Music.
