Sarah Waters In Conversation. Subscribe: http://bit.ly/subscribetotheBFI. Author Sarah Waters talks to LLGFF programmer Emma Smart about her remarkable career writing lesbian fiction. Following the premiere of The Night Watch, a BBC adaptation of her masterful fifth novel, Waters discusses the scarcity of quality lesbian literature that encouraged her to begin writing, and notes the paradox that, while male homosexuality was criminalised, it was also well documented, while lesbian histories are much harder to track down. Waters muses that she would find it hard to return writing a novel like Fingersmith, with its passionate melodrama, and describes the affinity many gay men and women have with spiritualism, a major theme in her fiction. Her excitement when Tipping the Velvet was adapted for television is palpable - as is her surprise that the raunchiness of the novel made it to the screen!
