Filmed in Blackpool on September 15th 2011. One of the stranger rides I've seen. The original Basil Brush coin operated ride was made by Edwin Hall & Co. of Streatham in the early 1970s. However, this one is quite clearly a modern copy - almost identical to the original, the only difference is that this one's tail is down while the original's tail was upright and acted as a kind of seat back for the rider. The base is typical of those used by J.M Kiddie Rides of Lowestoft, a company who started manufacturing coin operated rides in the mid-70s. The J.M Kiddie Rides company was dissolved in 2008, but there are a few records of a company named "Funtime Kiddie Rides" in Lowestoft who seem to be connected somehow...possibly the company was simply re-named but I still need to confirm that. If anybody has any information on these companies and their history, please let me know! I first heard these four nursery rhymes used on rides around 1999. The rides in question were the 20p animals made by RG Mitchell animal rides after they gave these models a major revamp. Not sure if it was the exact same soundtrack, but it was definitely the same tunes used in the same order. It's almost as thought they mixed together several different rides to make this curiosity! We were back in Blackpool this weekend (Saturday October 15th) and Basil was nowhere to be seen. I'm so glad I took the opportunity to record him for posterity while I had the chance! I am currently working on a website about coin operated rides, particularly those made (or at least commonly distributed) in the UK during the 1950s-90s. If anybody has old photos/video footage that they wouldn't mind sharing with me, please e-mail me at coinoperatedrides@hotmail.com or leave a comment below. I would be eternally grateful. Thank you! :)
