Arnos Vale Cemetery, Bath Road, Brislington, Bristol. I took these photos in May 2003, May 2004 and January 2011. https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@51.440... The 45 acre cemetery was opened in 1839. By the 1980s, there wasn't much room left for burials, so very little money was coming in. The site became seriously overgrown. In 1998 the cemetery lost its cremation licence, so there was no income at all. In 2001 Bristol City Council issued a Compulsory Purchase Order after negotiations to buy the site from the owner failed. The Arnos Vale Cemetery Trust was registered in 2007. There are plenty of interesting memorials. The one at 03:20 gives some unusual details: In loving remembrance of William Henry Smith who died at 8 Melrose Place West Clifton after a lingering illness August 30th 1872, Aged 28 years In affectionate remembrance of James Smith of Cotham Park who died Sunday evening September 10th, 1871 after a few hours illness aged 56 years Since I took these photos, a lot of work has gone into tidying up the cemetery. Even so, much of it is still overgrown, and will probably remain that way. The two entrance lodges and two chapels have been restored. The chapels are now business/event spaces and a café. The music is the Adagio from Mozart's Piano Concerto no. 23. Hélène Grimaud (piano) Radoslaw Szulc Bavarian Radio Chamber Orchestra
