A Rural Safari, Crocodiles, Snake Birds, and Leopards at Dusk When I checked in this afternoon, I was told about several activities the hotel offers, including a Rural Jeep Safari. At 4.30 pm, I joined three other guests in a shared jeep, and off we went into the countryside in search of leopards. Earlier that morning, six or seven leopards, including cubs, had been spotted, so hopes were high that we might see them too. Our first stop was a quiet lake, where a few crocodiles lay motionless on distant rocks, their bodies blending into the landscape. Then, as if on cue, an elegant snake bird, the Anhinga, appeared. With its impossibly long neck weaving through the water like a serpent, it demonstrated how it spears fish with its sharp beak. Watching it hunt was mesmerising. We continued deeper into the rocky terrain, scanning the hillsides. It took over an hour before our guide spotted movement high up on the granite slopes. And there they were, leopards, perfectly camouflaged against the stone. We were told we had seen 1large male, 2 females, and a cub, each in different locations across the hillside. Even from a distance, their size and presence were striking. With binoculars, we could see them clearly, lounging, stretching, or simply watching the world below with that effortless feline confidence. I managed to capture a few photos on my phone, though nothing compares to seeing them in person. It felt like a privilege - a quiet, humbling moment in the wild. As the light began to fade and the rocks turned golden, our guide set out a small picnic of tea and snacks. We stood there in the cooling evening air, sipping hot tea while the sun dipped behind the hills, knowing that somewhere above us, the leopards were settling in for the night. It was a simple moment, but deeply memorable - the kind of experience that stays with you long after the journey ends.
